History

The Multi-Asian Student Association was founded in 1999 by Kien Vuu.

The Multi-Asian Student Association, or MASA, is a social-cultural organization dedicated to educating the community of the rich diversity of the Asian student body of UCSD. Through interactive social and cultural events, we strive to spread awareness that Asian-Americans are not one culture but rather a mixture of many diverse cultures. We create a fun, comfortable, stereotype-free environment for individuals from all ethnic backgrounds to come together and learn about our differences as well as discover our similarities.

MASA is best known for our annual hip hop dance competition, FUSION, held in the spring. Started in 1999, Fusion has grown into the largest hip hop dance competition on the west coast and continues to grow larger every year, bringing in over 2500 viewers last spring and dance teams from all over California. MASA also holds an annual Midnight Mystery Bus in the fall and an Iron Chef Competition in the winter.

Unlike many organizations, MASA has no membership fees or obligations: you're already in! You decide on your level of commitment. If you just want to take a break from school and meet some new people, come out to one of our many cultural food nights or social activities. If you’re looking for something a little more involved you can join our Fusion committee, and help organize the largest student run event (aside from AS festivals) on campus.

Each year MASA continues to grow. We continue to promote togetherness among the diverse UCSD student body and will continue to create a positive environment for all. We are one family. We are one heartbeat. We are MASA.

We Are Masa

We are one heartbeat, one community
A group of students united
To break down barriers and eliminate stereotypes
So that we can educate others, and ourselves
Of the Asian American diversity
We are one color
Not white, not brown, nor pink or yellow
But clear

Why???
Because we do not see, the boundaries of R-A-C-E
RACE!
But instead, we embrace each others differences.
We are part of this vision
To create a comfortable space, for people of many faces
So that we can all unite and interact
And simply have fun! And make new friends and be involved
To be part of something

We are MASA
We hope to open others and expand ones mind
To new experiences, new cultures and new ideas
We are one heartbeat. We are one color.
We have this vision.

We are MASA
